What are some tips for dressing professionally?

I am doing a presentation on professional appearance at a business conference. I need to know general tips, common mistakes, and best kept secrets to getting a look that is professional but sets you apart from the crowd.

Is there anything a potential employee can do for a job interview that will make him/her unique but still maintain a sharp image?

I%26#039;ve heard there is a rule with the buttons of men%26#039;s sport coats. The middle button should always be buttoned, top sometimes, bottom never. When the man sits down he should always unbutton his jacket. Is this rule true and does it also apply to women?

When are cuff links necessary or inappropriate?

When a woman wears a skirt does she need to wear nylons?

For women, are open-toed shoes or sandals ever appropriate?

Any help with these questions or any information along these lines anyone could give would really be appreciated.

I haven%26#039;t heard of the button rule for women%26#039;s jackets. They are not tailored the same way as men%26#039;s, women%26#039;s clothes generally fit tighter.

There is nothing wrong with wearing cufflinks to a professional work environment. Except when making a presentation to a group of people. The cufflinks will take the attention of the audience away from your message. Think about it this way. You motion or point to something of a board or screen. You want your audience to see that, not your jewelry.

In a professional work environment, a woman should ALWAYS wear pantyhose with a skirt. It looks much more finished. Don%26#039;t wear cheap pantyhose. Get a good brand that is either very close to the color of your skin, white, cream, grey or black. Try to think conservative.

I would not recommend wearing open-toed shoes or sandals. Wear them some other time. Remember the think conservative thing.

One last thing. Wear quality jewelry, even if you only have one item. Costume jewelry is for Halloween.

Good luck!
Reply:The open toe no hose look is fine. My attorney even wears that to court with a nice pantsuit.Nylons are not as required as the last generation.
